C.A. Reitzel's Bookstore & Publishers The "Golden Age" Bookstore

The oldest bookstore in the country. In 1819 C.A. Reitzel established his own university bookstore in Copenhagen supplying books to, among others, the University Library and other institutions of higher education.

The bookstore has been a supplier of books for many years to the Royal Library, the University Library and a string of research libraries and institutions of higher education, and we supply books, journals and periodicals to university libraries of other countries such as Germany, Britain, the USA, Norway and Sweden.

Over time this has developed into close co-operation with a number of societies and institutions to publish and distribute books by among others Det Danske Sprog- og Litteratursleskab (The Danish Society of Language and Literature), Det Kongelige Danske Videnskabernes Selskab (The Royal Danish Society of the Sciences), Universitets-Jubilæets Danske Samfund, Modersmål-Selskabet (The Danish Language Society), Søren Kierkegaard Selskabet (The Soeren Kierkegaard Society), Det Kongelige Danske Geografiske Selskab (The Royal Danish Geographical Society), Danmarks Forvaltningshøjskole (The Danish School of Public Administration) and several departments at the University of Copenhagen.

Through many years C.A. Reitzel has been a commission agent for Kanehara & Co., the large Japanese publishers whose colour plates, developed by professor Ishihara, are used all over the world to test for colour-blindness.

Over the years the publishing house has specialised in the publishing of books within the fields of philosophy, history of civilisation, contemporary history, and literature. Although the Søren Kierkegaard books probably remain the cornerstone of our publishing activity, we publish a wide range of books.
